A RIVER-FULL OF FLOWERS FOR MUSIKA MANILA
Marikina City, Nov. 9, 1997 - Thousands of flowers, each holding a flaming candle, will float down Marikina River on November 28 as the whole country celebrates Musika Manila, a grand music festival that will transform many parts of the archipelago into a historic showcase of sights and sounds.
Residents of Marikina City will float the lotus flowers and candles as school children dance the Pandanggo sa Ilaw and Wasiwas beginning at 4 Pm at the newly renovated Marikina River Park.
Musika Manila will also feature the best of Filipino jazz, folk, classic and ethnic songs and sounds, according to Department of Tourism Undersecretary Macabangkit Lanto, chairman of the organizing committee.
DOT Secretary Mina Gabor points out that the Asia-Pacific Folk Festival is one of the highlights of the Musika Manila, and Thai participants will lead the Marikina residents in their river ceremony, which resembles the "Loi Krathong" Thai festival.
"It will be the biggest gathering of Filipino and foreign artists who will showcase their respective cultures through music and dances in different venues throughout the celebration from November 22 to 30," says Secretary Gabor.
All festival shows will be open to the public free of charge.
