SHAHANI FOR ILOILO INTERNATIONAL AIR/SEA PORTS
Iloilo City, Nov. 7, 1997 - Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani will push for the establishment of an international airport and an international seaport in Iloilo City, to convert Iloilo into a major economic center in the Visayas.
In a dialogue with the Iloilo City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shahani challenged the businessmen and shipowner to develop not just Iloilo but the entire island of Panay.
"Iloilo should have international linkages especially with the globalization in our midst," Shahani reminded them.
Iloilo and Panay can duplicate the development pace in the former military bases of Subic and Clark if local officials and the private sector could work out with Congress and the executive branch for the passage of a law that would grant Iloilo and Panay the same tax privileges as Subic and Clark.
"You should all make sure that Panay wold be known not only as a tourist destination but a destination for investors as well. Come up with a law or local initiatives to ensure that this will happen," she prodded.
The initiative should come from the Iloilo community, she said "because no one will pay attention to you but you should address yourself and invite partners to do it, and in no time, Iloilo would be the next stop of the world."
