DISEASE OUTBREAK CANCELS MANILA HORSE RACES
Manila, Nov. 11, 1997 - The Philippine Racing Commission yesterday declared a state of emergency in the local horse racing industry and cancelled all the scheduled races this month due to the outbreak of a highly contagious equine disease.
The cancellation was recommended by the industry's veterinarians to contain the further spread of the disease-causing virus which has now affected close to 90% of the local horse race population.
Acting Philracom chairman Eduardo Domingo Jr. explained that the race cancellation will allow all race horses ample time to recover from the effects of the disease and give local authorities time to gather enough information and ascertain the true extent and nature of the epidemic.
