RUBEN TORRES BIO-FLICK FLOPS
Manila, Nov. 12, 1997 - The P30-million movie "Kadre" based on the life and times of Executive Secretary Ruben Torres was a resounding flop in the box office.
"Kadre" stars Cesar Montano opposite Charlene Gonzales, in the movie expected by Premiere productions to be a big hit.
People close to Torres who saw the movie criticized it for being 90% fiction, particularly the action scenes showing Cesar Montano a.k.a. Ruben Torres wielding, and firing, long firearms.
Production staff narrated in previous interviews that the changes in the scenes were made upon the insistence of Cesar Montano, who allegedly felt there was not enough "action" in Torres' real life.
Movie columnist Bella Palma of the Philippine Tribune theorized today that the failure of the movie was caused by the love triangle controversy pitting Cesar, Charlene and erstwhile Montano live-in Teresa Loyzaga.
"The love triangle which cropped up during the promotion of the movie diminished Cesar's box office appeal," Palma writes. "It seemed the movie-going public sympathizes with Teresa who bore Cesar a lovechild."
