ZAMBALES TOWN HAS NEW MAYOR
San Antonio, Zambales, Nov. 29, 1997 - The Commission on Elections has declared a new mayor of San Antonio: Juan Alvez, who was declared the loser in the 1995 elections.
Alvez filed an election protest in 1995, after Romeo Lonzanida was proclaimed mayor of the town. The Comelec did a recount of the votes cast. After the recount, Alvez was found to have garnered 1,720 votes, while the incumbent mayor Lonzanida only received 1,488 votes. Alvez was declared a winner by 232 votes.
The Comelec also set aside an earlier court decision which nullified the elections due to massive fraud, irregularities and cheating.
The next election for mayor is in May 1998.
