P10-M CEBU INCINERATOR MAY BE JUNKED
Cebu City, Nov. 29, 1997 - A garbage crisis looms in Cebu with the reported decision by city officials not to operate a P10-million waste incinerator plant.
The incinerator is a major component of the P220-million Inayawan sanitary landfill which is part of the Metro Cebu Development Project Phase II, funded by the Japan Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund.
At a public hearing on the plant last Sunday, an American chemistry professor called the facility a "Mickey Mouse."
Dr. Paul Connet of St. Lawrence University of New York said "it is not safe to burn paper, it's a joke."
The hearing was called after the Mactan Dev. Project asked for a barangay council resolution endorsing the project. The endorsement is a requirement for the issuance of an environmental compliance certificate. Environmentalists and villagers have been opposing the incinerator.
