SBMA EXTENDING BOUNDARY INTO OLONGAPO
Olongapo City, Nov. 27, 1997 - The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is building guardhouses and gates along the highway, initial steps to extend the boundary of the freeport into Olongapo City.
The Gate Project was the subject of a memorandum of agreement signed by the SBMA, the city government and the Department of Public Works and Highways. Under the project, portions of the national highway in Barangays Barrette and Catalan will be widened to accommodate two additional lanes.
SBMA Chairman Richard Gordon said the freeport's expansion will enhance ongoing developments within the special economic zone and spread economic benefits to the surrounding communities.
There is reportedly a shortage of available land within the freeport for the growing number of investors. Locators in the industrial park, together with the Acer computer manufacturing firm, and JVC (electronics) will create 17,000 more jobs when they are fully operational.
