APALIT POLICE CHIEF SACKED OVER JUETENG
Apalit, Pampanga, Nov. 20, 1997 - Apalit Police Chief Lina Sarmiento has been ordered relieved for her failure to stop the operation of jueteng in her jurisdiction.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Robert Barbers issued the relief order after the arrest of 43 suspected jueteng personnel in Apalit last Tuesday.
Sarmiento is the 38th police officer sacked by Barbers since January in connection with the government's campaign against illegal gambling, particularly jueteng.
Last month, those fired included the Philippine National Police Provincial Director for Pampanga as well as the chief of police of Angeles City and San Fernando.
