RAMOS HONORS DAVAO'S BAGOBO MAYOR
Davao City, Nov. 15, 1997 - President Fidel Ramos unveiled a marker for the late Congressman Elias Lopez, Davao City's first Bagobo mayor.
The president noted that the late congressman Lopez always took pride in being a Bagobo, and named the brand new University of the Philippines-Mindanao Dormitory in honor of Lopez, "as a timely recognition of his work for the passage of the measure creating the university."
Lopez is known as the "Father of UP-Mindanao" because he lobbied for the passage of Republic Act 7889 which established the UP campus in Mindanao.
The UP-Mindanao staff and students were urged by the president to "assume a leadership role in establishing the information superhighway in this part of Asia. He also expressed hope that more indigenous peoples could now be admitted to the University of the Philippines.
The dormitory is a coed facility which can house 344 students in 86 rooms.
