SCHOLARSHIPS AT UP FOR MUSLIMS AND LUMADS
Diliman, Quezon City, Nov. 11, 1997 - The University of the Philippines will intensify its Affirmative Action Program (ACP) to provide better collegiate opportunities to promising Muslim and Lumad students in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
University data show that only 700 applicants took the UP College Admissions Test (UPCAT) this year in the test centers of Tawi-Tawi, Cotabato City, Jolo and Marawi City. To increase the number of applicants, UP President Emil Javier will push for more active recruitment and preparatory programs from ARMM high schools next year.
Next March, the top 200 3rd year high school Muslim and Lumad students from ARMM schools will be invited to a summer bridge program in UP-Mindanao to enhance their skills in language proficiency, mathematics, science and history. These Lumad and Muslim students will take the UPCAT in August 1998.
A similar program will be given those admitted to UP in June next year, to prepare them for their freshman year at the state university.
