LEISURE HOVERCRAFTS FACTORY IN BATAAN
Manila, Oct. 30, 1997 - The Philippine Economic Zone Authority has approved the registration of Osprey Hovercraft, which is putting up a shipbuilding plant in the Bataan Economic Zone.
Sergio Montinola, president of Osprey Hovercraft Philippines, said the Bataan plant will be finished next year, and will diversify to include fiberglass hulls and fishing vessels.
Osprey already has a plant in Tanza, Iloilo, which has been building one-seater to seven- seater hovercraft vessels.
The Osprey hovercraft is an environmental-friendly water craft which literally travels on a cushion of air, pushed up and above the water by giant propeller fans under the hull. It is claimed to be practically unsinkable because of its fiberglass-aluminum hull. It can also travel over sandbanks, marshes, land, mud and sand.
The Bataan facility is expected to operate hand-in-hand with the booming resort industry, particularly in places where the shallow sand bars make ordinary boats impractical, as they have to anchor too far from the shore.
With the hovercraft, tourists are delivered literally at the doorsteps of their cottages and beach huts.
