PEACE MUSEUM TO MARK LEYTE LANDING SITE
Tacloban, Leyte, Oct. 29, 1997 - A Peace Museum will soon rise on the very spot where General Douglas MacArthur landed to start liberating the Philippines near the end of World War II. The Department of Tourism has given Leyte Governor Remedios Petilla full support and encouragement to start construction of the project immediately.
Petilla, who is chairperson of the Eastern Visayas Regional Tourism Council and the Tourism Council of Leyte, has started negotiations for the funding of the museum.
The Peace museum, Petilla said, "will perpetuate the memories of valor and bravery of the veterans who fought for the independence of the country from foreign dominion. "
Petilla envisions the museum as a showcase of the weaponry and arms carriers of the Second World War, with displays, photographs and artifacts from the conflict.
Palo, Leyte was chosen by General MacArthur as the place to land in fulfilment of his promise "I shall return" while in Australia preparing for an assault on the Japanese occupation forces.
Once the project is finished, it will be a focal point during the yearly celebration of the Leyte Landing, while for the rest of the year it will welcome local and foreign tourists who flock to the site daily.
