P2.7 BILLION FOR INTRAMUROS FACELIFT
Manila, Oct. 26, 1997 - By the end of 1998, P2.7 billion will have been spent for the improvement and restoration of the Walled City of Intramuros.
Intramuros Administration chief Dominador Ferrer said P1.4 billion is from a special fund raised by the private sector, while the rest is from the government.
The pool of funds will be used initially for the priority projects such as the clearing of squatters and development of privately owned lots for residential and commercial purposes after the resettlement of squatters.
Other elements of the project are: aesthetic upgrading of buildings that do not conform to the Intramuros building code, completion of the Hotel and Tourism Institute of the Philippines, reconstruction of the old Ateneo as a multi-purpose cultural center and construction of an Ecclesiastical Art Museum.
Other projects expected to be finished next year are: the naval museum, the restoration of the Aduana Building for national archives, street lighting, cobble stoning and concrete paving of streets and the construction of a parking building.
