WHITEWATER KAYAKING DEBUTS IN ANTIQUE
Panay Island, Oct. 25, 1997 - Paddlers from six countries are competing this weekend in the Philippines Whitewater Kayaking Cup, the first event of its kind in the country. The sports event is happening on Tibiao River, Antique, a mere 90 minutes away from Boracay island.
The Cup involves two main events: slalom and whitewater. Slalom has paddlers passing through up to 25 gates suspended over a varied stretch of river between 200 and 500 meters long. Whitewater is a swift downriver race over a rapid-filled course of three to six kilometers.
The participants are vying for prizes worth P150,000, including expeditions and Philippine vacations. The event's main social activity is a fiesta hosted and funded by the provincial government of Antique and featuring native food, culture, dances and folklore.
