METRO MANILA HOTELS OCCUPANCY UP
Manila, Oct. 24, 1997 - Hotels in Metro Manila had more guests, registering 70.14% occupancy in the first eight months of 1997, compared to the 68.87% for same period last year.
The recent growth in business for economy hotels reflects the emergence of a more price- conscious market in the light of the currency crisis in the region.
But the price rate practice in Manila bucks the trend elsewhere in the ASEAN. While resorts and hotels in countries like Thailand have lowered their prices to attract more foreign tourists, majority of Philippine hotels continue to impose annual room rate increases.
Consequently, figures from the Department of Tourism show that de luxe hotels, the favorite category of foreign guests, experienced a slip in occupancy levels to 73.44% from last year's 74.46%.
The Manila Midtown Hotel was the most occupied first class hotel with an occupancy rate of 82%.
