PASONANCA PARK RESTORATION BEGINS
Zamboanga City, Oct 22, 1997 - Zamboanguenos have started work on the rehabilitation and restoration of historic Pasonanca Park, one of their city's major tourist attractions. Their move is in answer to the call made by Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor.
Last week, after touring Pasonanca Park, Gabor commented on its deplorable condition. "My idea of Zamboanga City is blooming with flowers and colorful vintas, but I felt sad upon viewing Pasonanca Park. It is deteriorating and in gloom."
Gabor ordered Department of Tourism officials in Region 9 led by Regional Director Ricardo San Juan to begin a cleanliness and beautification drive in coordination with government and civic groups in order to restore the park's lost beauty.
"We can't invite foreign tourists to see Pasonanca Park with garbage littered all over and with its three swimming pools in an embarrassing state of disrepair," she said.
The park, noted for its tree house and century-old trees, has been left abandoned by the city government. Although civic groups including the Philippine Navy and Air Force have tried to rehabilitate the park, the city government had failed to follow up and sustain the efforts.
