MUMMY CAVES, SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH ENDANGERED
Manila, Oct. 21, 1997 - The Philippine government has just learned that two of the country's tourist attractions have been listed among the list of 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World.
The announcement was made by the World Monuments Fund (WMF), a New York-based non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of monuments of art, which added the Kabayan Mummy Caves and the San Sebastian Church to the list for 1998-1999.
The Mummy Caves in Kabayan, Benguet, are considered sacred sites, and are actually several caves in Timbac, Ngalab, Napay, Odjusan, Anchokey, Tinongshol, Ballay, Pitel, Bangao, Kangal, Tamak, Panutuan and Keykey.
Meanwhile, the WMF has deleted from its list the Angono Petroglyphs, the oldest known work of art in the Philippines and a National Cultural Treasure. This is in view of the attention and developments in the site by the National Museum, the World Monuments Watch, the American Express and the Department of Tourism.
