RP WEIGHTLIFTING TEAM TO TAIWAN

Oct. 30, 1997 - A 23-man Philippine powerlifting team left for Taiwan yesterday to compete in the 9th Asian Men and Women Powerlifting Championship, to be held in Chang-Hua from October 31 - November 3.

The team is bannered by Erlina Pecante and Peter Edward Torres, the country's reigning strongest man and woman. Also with the team is Antonio Tagulbao, 16-times national champion.

Pecante, holder of the Philippine and Asian record in the deadlift event, will be defending her title in the women's 67 kilogram weight class, while Torres and Tagulbao will defend their titles in the men's 100 kilogram and 52 kilogram weight categories.

The trip is financed by the Philippine Sports Commission.
