ONYOK'S BROTHER GETS BRONZE IN BUDAPEST
Budapest, Hungary, Oct. 24, 1997 - Filipino Roel Velasco Wednesday pounded his Japanese rival to give his country its first bronze medal in the 19th World Amateur Boxing Championships at the Budapest Sports Hall.
The 24-year-old Velasco, pride of the Philippine Navy, is an older brother of Atlanta Olympics silver medallist Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco.
"I thank the Lord, President Ramos, my parents, my brothers, Mayor Mel Lopez and Manny Lopez, coaches and my team mates. I can't describe my joy at being able to give the Philippines a medal in this tournament. But we will not rest until we get the gold" Roel said.
