MOBILINE WHIPS ALASKA, GORDON'S LICKS SAN MIGUEL
Pasay City, Oct. 1, 1997 - Mobiline welcomed back coach Tommy Manotoc with a victory over defending champion Alaska at last night's Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor's Cup Eliminations at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Phone Pals were led by import Artemus McClary who scored 37 points with 20 rebounds. Alaska led by 20 points in the second half, but 1995 Rookie of the Year Jeffrey Cariaso came to the rescue with seven points, his two free throws coming in the final 11.6 seconds of the game, giving his team a 3-point lead, for a final 92-89 win.
The Phone Pal's second coach, Derek Pumaren, called the shots jointly with Manotoc, who explained "Two heads are better than one. I take care of offense and Derek takes care of defense.
The evening's second game saw San Miguel defeated by Gordon's Gin, 98-95.
Barman-import Robinson's 41 points failed to ensure a win; his team tailed the Boars throughout. Quarterscores: 25-20, 51-40, 73-69, 98-95.
