JOHN REGALA MORTGAGES HOME TO FINANCE "ASKAL"

Manila, Oct. 13, 1997 - Actor-model John Regala, with no formal training in movie directing and no prior experience as film producer, has jumped into the business in a big way, and could lose his shirt in the process.

Regala reportedly spent close to P10 million to fulfill this lifelong dream. He produces, directs and stars in "Askal" under his newly-formed outfit JVS Productions.

Askal means "asong kalye" (street dog) which describes the character he plays int he movie-- tough, smart and like a modern-day Robin Hood in his concern for the down-trodden. The title is from a rap song composed by Andrew E, who is the movie's musical director.

John went over the budget and had to mortgage his house to finish the film, which has Beth Tamayo as his leading lady. Other stars featured are: Mat Ranillo III, William Martinez, Bob Soler, Jun Aristorenas, Eva Darren, Dick Israel and CJ Ramos as the young Askal.
