DILG NIXES GUNS FOR BARANGAY TANODS
Quezon City, Oct. 31, 1997 - Interior and Local Government Secretary Robert Barbers is against providing barangay tanods with firearms.
Responding to the proposal of the National League of Barangays to arms the barangay tanods, Barbers said there is a need for further study on the matter, to determine if the firearms are really necessary.
Barbers cited the law which provides that only the chief of the Philippine National Police is authorized to issue permits to possess and carry firearms.
The proposal is strongly opposed by many sectors, including Cebu officials who fear that the tanods might abuse their authority once they are issued firearms.
