ILIGAN GETS GLOBE TELEPHONE SYSTEM
Manila, Oct. 24, 1997 - Iligan City is now wired for communicating with the rest of the world. Last Thursday, Globe Telecom opened its telephone host exchange which will provide fixed telephone service to all of Central Mindanao.
Globe is the third telephone system now servicing Iligan. Pioneer Maranao Telephone Co was established in 1951, while the national government's National Telephone Program using Italtel technology reached the city in 1993. Maratel and Italtel announced interconnection a few weeks ago.
The technology Globe is using in Iligan is the Wireless Local Loop or WLL access technology, which will provide the same level of service as landlines but with radio technology's one advantage: no more landlines to be strung across the territory.
Globe will also complete by year-end its $17 million national transmission network stretching from Baguio to Davao.
Residents are hoping that Globe will soon resolve its problem of interconnection with Maratel so that local residents need not dial and pay for long distance calls to their next-door neighbors.
