NAVY WARSHIPS VS. ILOCOS SMUGGLERS
Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Oct. 20, 1997 - It took two navy warships, but the Philippine Navy finally put a stop to smuggling activities in the waters off Ilocos Sur.
Senior Police Superintendent Enrique Villanueva, provincial PNP director, reported too PNP headquarters that this is the first time that government authorities have acted positively after years of failure to solve the smuggling in Northern Luzon.
Villanueva narrated that foreign ships used to dump untaxed goods off the coast of Puro Pinget, Sto. Domingo several times month, but they no longer operate because of the incessant patrolling by the navy ships.
Earlier, Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson sought the assistance of the national government to stop the sources of smuggled items flooding his province by apprehending the foreign ships that bring them in illegally.
