CEBU ECOZONE HAMPERED BY WATER LACK
Cebu City, Oct. 20, 1997 - The government wants and early solution to the water shortage problem that's hampering operations at the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ). The desalination plant, a temporary solution to the problem, can be built only after a bidding on the project.
Cebu business leaders have asked Philippine Economic Zone Authority administrator Lilia de Lima to facilitate preparations for the rebidding of the water projects, which will be undertaken through the build-operate-transfer system.
The project was first bid out in 1995, but the PEZA board declared the bidding a failure. and refused to award the contract to the sole bidder.
The water project will involve a constructing a $3-billion desalination plant which can provide enough water to over 100 firms now operating in Mactan.
