DESALINATION PLANTS ALLOWED IN CEBU
Lapu-Lapu City, Oct. 17, 1997 - The operation of desalination plants in this water-starved city will be allowed provided the salt water will be sourced offshore.
The City Council is requiring proponents of desalination plants to present studies that will prove the plants do not damage the island's aquifer. The council had earlier approved an ordinance which prohibits the use of desalination plants that will tap brackish water sources.
Brackish water, along the coast where fresh water empties into the sea, is breeding ground for many indigenous species of fish and crustaceans, such as milkfish (bangus), mullet (banak) and prawns (sugpo).
