NO TO VICE PRESIDENCY, SAYS DAVAO CITY MAYOR

Davao City, Oct. 11, 1997 - Mayor Rodrigo Duterte would rather retire than run for the country's vice presidency. This was announced by the mayor himself who said it was President Fidel Ramos himself who offered to make him the official candidate for vice president of the ruling party Lakas-NUCD.

"I turned down the President's offer," Duterte revealed. "A national office is just not for me and I am content in having served the Dabawenyos all these years."

Duterte vowed to retired from politics when he bows out of office next year. He is barred from seeking a fourth 3-year term.
