24-HOUR ELECTRICITY FOR PUERTO GALERA
Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Oct. 6, 1997 - The noise and pollution of power generators for each resort and restaurant here are now a thing of the past. Electricity is now available around the clock, supplied by a power barge which produces all the power needed by Oriental and Occidental Mindoro provinces.
The power barge was initially opposed in court by municipal officials of Puerto Galera town, who feared the damage it might cause to the environment. A technicality won the case for the proponents of the power project.
Now that the resort owners no longer have to purchase thousands of pesos of gas and oil for private generators, they can afford to maintain room rates at old, pre-depreciation levels.
More ferry crossings are now scheduled between Batangas City and Puerto Galera. VIVA Lines has 3 trips daily: 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. while the SIKAT Ferry leaves daily at 11:30 a.m., with a fastcraft at 11:00 a.m.
Those who miss the regularly-scheduled ferries may opt to take motorized bancas docked at the Batangas City pier which leave when they have enough passengers.
The Coco Beach Resort has its own ferry service reserved for tourists on package tours to the resort.
