FACTORY CLOSED BY STRIKE LAYS OFF WORKERS
Mariveles, Bataan, Oct. 11, 1997 - A foreign-owned shoe factory has laid off 1,016 workers due to financial difficulties and labor union problems.
The L&L Lawrence Footwear in the Bataan Economic Zone has filed a notice of closure with the Department of Labor and Employment. The company, owned by Korean Businessman Sae Chae Lee, belongs to the Han Mi Group of Companies. It will close November 5.
The firm's employees association had filed a notice of strike when the collective bargaining agreement negotiations broke down.
